Metallographic examinations

We are happy to examine, for example,  iron-based alloys, titanium and titanium alloys, CoCrMo forging alloys, multiphase alloys or mixed ceramics for you.

We offer comprehensive options for the preparation of specimen for materialographic examinations, such as cutting, embedding, grinding, polishing, and etching. Both longitudinal and transverse sections can be carried out in accordance with standards, as well as various etching processes.

On metallic and ceramic materials, we determine the grain size index and grain size microscopically, based on standard methods, as well as the phase contents for multiphase structures using point counting or line section methods.

For metallic materials, we also offer the characterization and determination of non-metallic inclusions on unetched sections of metallic materials with image documentation. We determine the content of precipitated phases such as delta ferrite, sigma phase and iron-beta phase using comparative reference series.

According to which standards do we test?

Where possible, we carry out our testing services in accordance with or based on these international standards:

Grain size, microstructure and phase content
  • ISO 643
  • ISO 20160
  • ASTM E112
  • ASTM E562
  • ASTM E930
  • ETTC-3 / ETTC-4 / ETTC-8
Determination of non-metallic inclusions
  • ASTM E45

Which devices do we use?

  • Leica DMI 5000 M light microscope
  • Light microscope Nikon Epiphot
  • Camera Jenoptik Gryphax Naos
  • IMS image management system
  • Embedding press Metkon ECOPRESS 200
  • Struers CitoPress
  • Struers TegraPol-21 (with Tegra Doser 5) and PRESI Meccatech 334 grinding and polishing machines

For which material tests do we use this method?

We use metallographic examinations for the following material tests, among others:

  • Grain size, microstructure and phase content
  • Determination of non-metallic inclusions in metals

What you should know about this method?

If you have any further questions, we will be happy to help you in a personal meeting.

For which materials are the methods suitable?
We offer metallographic analysis for a wide range of metallic materials. We are happy to analyze iron-based alloys, titanium and titanium alloys, CoCrMo forging alloys and multiphase alloys for you.
We are also able to precisely determine the grain size, microstructure and volume fractions of multiphase structures, also in the case of mixed ceramics.
What needs to be considered with these methods and samples?
Sample specifications:
  • Sample type: according to customer specifications or by agreement
  • Sample size: Evaluation area ideally >50 mm2
Are the analyses accredited?
Yes, these test methods are validated and accredited according to ISO/IEC 17025.
